Laser Techniques Explained

Although laser vision correction has been around now for over 25 years, there are still basically only two different techniques- 1)  ASA (Advanced Surface Ablation), also called PRK and LASEK or 2) Lasik. The Laser performs the same function in both techniques-a remoulding of the shape the cornea. Myopia (nearsight) is treated by making the cornea flatter, and longsight by a steepening of the cornea.

Advanced Surface Ablation is a very popular technique with Israeli laser surgeons today owing to its simplicity and safety record. Laser is applied to the surface of the eye, without any cutting of the cornea. Good functional vision is achieved after 4 days, and continues to improve for up to a month at least.

Lasik has been around for about 20 years. In this technique, up to about 20% of the corneal thickness is raised as a flap, after a computerised incision. The laser is applied to the layer exposed underneath, and the flap is replaced. The advantage of this technique is, amongst other issues, the rapid healing with vision reaching excellent levels within hours. The disadvantage is the fact that there is a cutting procedure performed on the cornea.
